This is the smallest of the scops-owls (19 cm)(Robson) in Peninsular Malaysia. It has a large geographic range however it is seldom seen.
The largest of the scops-owls (27-29cm)(Robson) in Peninsular Malaysia, but also the one with the smallest geographic range; the White-fronted Scops Owl is seldom seen and not known from many sites.
Today at Pasir Ris Park in Singapore a drama unfolded with a family of Spotted Wood Owls and a pair of Crested Goshawks.
This article presents a nesting record of the The Barred Eagle-Owl Bubo sumatranus sumatranus. The species has a wide range from Myanmar, through Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore. It can adapt to the widespread monoculture habitat of oil palm plantations and is of least concern. Still it is a striking looking owl and a pleasure to see.
